Designer notes from Martin
It's the beginning of 2023. At this point I have been designing my own yoyos for almost a year. When it comes to inspiration, sometimes I get inspired by a particular style of play, curve of a random home appliance, or more often than not, by trying a yoyo. It's not an unfamiliar sight to me to see people try yoyos with well established recycled shapes and be impressed by it to an extent that they actually want to play with it. This was just the case, a very down to earth, affordable take on Sleipnir-esque shape. The main pleasant element of this particular yoyo was its shape simplicity and sub-55mm diameter. It was the type of yoyo that just makes you cozy up in intricate mounts right next to your bedside lamp.
Whenever something sparks my interest in such a way, I can’t help but try to customize it. For the first 2 months it sat and brewed in my computer as a bimetal design. After several weeks of slight tweaks and letting it sit I replaced the stainless steel with a delrin rim. As a result, the design lost a significant amount of weight, which led me to increase both the diameter and width, resulting in goldilocks 54.5mm diameter and 46mm width. Little over 3 months later the design was complete - a V shape profile paved with curves to invoke an organic feeling.
The options for color combinations were just insane, so i decided to pull the trigger and prototype it. Few weeks later it arrived, and to put it mildly I was amazed. It was just like I imagined it when I submitted it for production.
Few weeks later I headed to Prague for Czech Yoyo Cup, where I had probably all my friends try it out. The feedback only reinforced my confidence in the design.
Petr jokingly but accurately compared it to Henrys Python, I mean look at that.
Coincidentally Remy decided to fly out to the contest, and as we were hanging out, he was one of the people who enjoyed the design. The question regarding full release arose. I told him I don't know when but it may happen, and that was it.. Until 2 months later at Worlds in Osaka. One evening, as we were hanging out, Remy offered to make this yoyo available to everyone.
Almost a year later we are presenting you the Dis Sibyl, a hybrid design that rocks a super durable 7075 aluminium body and embedded POM rings that add the nostalgic toy-like flare and support soft catches in hand. On top of that the POM protects your yoyo from most common concrete smooches, thanks to its durability.
The Sibyl is not really a competition oriented gear (though it can do that too, as Remy demonstrated at EYYC stage in Poland), rather I would like you to think of it as your favorite comfy hoodie you like to slip in on a breezy spring evening.
Big thank you to everyone who supported the design and most of all, thank you to Remy who made all of this possible! It’s been a joy <3
*Black Sibyls are matte blasted on the profile, and polished on the cup.
