From 44EMPORIUM:
As detailed in the blog, Feather underwent numerous design iterations before the concept became truly viable. Early development saw Evan Cui experimenting with aluminum rings integrated into 3D-printed yo-yos—an ambitious idea that, at the time, resulted in excessive vibration and limited playability.

That vision was ultimately realized through the expertise of Wayne from Layer Infinity. By refining the design and execution, he transformed the concept into a competition-ready yo-yo, successfully debuting its competitive journey at Evan Cui’s ECR Preliminary performance.

From Layer Infinity:
Evan Cui's journey with the Feather consisted of over 50 iterations of 3D printed prototypes. One of those prototypes was a hybrid with a 3D printed body and machined aluminum inner rims. According to Evan, and agreed by almost everyone who tried it, that hybrid was by far the best out of all the prototypes.
Compared to the final bi-metal version, that hybrid prototype had the same profile and its signature 55g, but was a little bigger in order to accommodate the aluminum rims. Despite how well it played, the prototype was rough around the edges, especially near the hub where the support material was removed.

With the recent release of the TITANIUM hybrid Feather, Evan reminisced on the potential of that hybrid prototype that played so well. It was through a collaboration with Layer Infinity who optimized it into a retail worthy 3D printed yoyo: Feather Origin. Aside from a more robust hub design, Feather Origin retains almost every aspect of the hybrid prototype including its size, aluminum inner rims, and 55g weight.
